Get On The Dancefloor: 3 Music Styles Perfect For A Fun Wedding Reception

No one wants a staid wedding reception, one where people sit quietly and you can hear the sound of silverware clinking against plates over the hum of very tame music. Most couples would like to have a wedding reception where people have a blast and remember the event. This means dancing and really great music. However, you need to plan properly, otherwise you will end up with music that is really not appropriate for dancing. So, you have to think about what you want and then either find a band that will perform the music live, or, arrange for a DJ that has a good playlist. Here's a few suggestions.

Bachata and Salsa

If you or your spouse loves Latin music, then you should definitely pick a DJ that has experience working with Latin music. While reggaeton might be a bit too hot for a wedding reception, Bachata and salsa are perfectly suited. These music styles are not too "club oriented" but they are fantastic for dancing. Salsa is probably the preeminent dance style in the Latin community, and the music has Puerto Rican and Cuban roots. The music is upbeat and it's a great choice because it spans generations. The older folks will appreciate the DJ's Celia Cruz or Tito Puente tracks, while the younger crowd will love the Victor Manuelle songs.

In addition to Salsa, make sure that the DJ also has some Bachata music on his playlist, especially if one side of the family is Dominican. This music is a nostalgic favorite of people whose families come from the Dominican Republic. It's very similar to Salsa, but with a slightly different beat. One of the really cool things about Bachatta is that it's perfect for couples who want to dance together since the dance form relies so much on close partner movement (as evidenced in the classic side-by-side move).

Classical Music

If you are looking for a calmer reception, and think salsa and bachata is a bit too fast,  but still want dancing, then consider classical music. It's perfect for receptions where you don't think people will want to get out there and do fast dances. With classical music, you can have people slow dance, and do variations of dances such as the waltz. The music is also perfect for background music. If you are looking for an elegant style of music, then you really can't beat classical music. Just make sure that you choose a DJ that will have a playlist that is not just filled with long symphonies, you want short selections that are great for background music. An inexperienced DJ might just put on a Symphony, and you wouldn't want Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture blasting away while dinner is being served. So, pick a DJ who can present you with a playlist ahead of time and you can sample it to see if it's to your liking.

Pop Music Hits For The DJ

Finally, don't forget pop hits. You don't have to go really niche with Latin or Classical music. You might want Beyonce, Sugarland, or Snow Patrol. If that's the case, you will want a DJ that has experience playing pop hits. When you're talking with them, make sure you ask them about their transitioning technique. It needn't be too fancy, but you do want to make sure that they can mix the songs together so that there is not an abrupt stop and start between songs, otherwise you might as well play your ipod. A good wedding DJ, like JTM Entertainment, will know how to mix the music so that there is a even flow throughout the night.
