How Can You Know If Your Piano Is Still Usable?

A piano is a fine instrument to own, but it can be hard to know if a piano is still usable. Maybe you inherited your great-grandma's ancient piano that hasn't been touched in thirty years. Maybe your piano was damaged in a fire or flood. Maybe your piano is filled with dust mites or mold. Maybe your piano is so off-pitch that you wonder if it can be saved at all. In any of these scenarios, you'll want to turn to a piano technician. Many piano tuning companies offer a variety of services besides maintenance tuning.

Pitch Adjustment Tuning

If your piano has not been played in many years or if it has not received regular tuning services, it will likely be playable again with a pitch adjustment tuning. A pitch adjustment tuning will change the tension in the piano strings, which raises or lowers the pitch. The technician will do this until the tension in the strings is equalized, allowing them to complete a more fine tuning. The A key above middle C needs to be at 440 Hertz, or vibrations per second, for the piano to be in tune. You can use a tuning fork or an electronic tuner to compare pitches on your own, but a piano tuner can tell you for sure how much tuning the piano will need.

Deep Cleaning

If you think your piano is too dirty or if bugs and dust mites have gotten inside it over time, you might assume that it's beyond repair. However, many piano tuning companies also offer both internal and external cleaning services that will leave your piano looking like new. They have special tools that will help them get inside to areas of your piano that you wouldn't be able to reach, as well as tools for cleaning the strings and other internal parts that you shouldn't try to clean on your own. Getting rid of all the random dust, pests, or even mold inside your piano is important not only for the health of your piano but for your own health.

Restoration

If your piano has suffered smoke or water damage, you are definitely wondering if it is salvageable. However, many piano maintenance companies also do repairs—repairs beyond a stuck key or pedal. Find a company that offers restoration and rebuilding services and explain exactly how your piano is damaged. They might be able to save it.

Appraisal and Evaluation

Maybe you inherited an old piano that you won't use and want to know if you should throw it out or try to sell it. Many piano tuning companies can do an appraisal and tell you what kind of condition your piano is in. That way you know if you should make additional repairs before trying to find a buyer. Some companies can even help you sell it, either by listing it on their website or buying it from you to put in their store.
